For those of you who saw Steve's very first post, you remember he was talking about the Mustang Shelby GT 500. If you also watched the movie 'Gone In 60 Seconds', you will remember a special version of that model, Eleanor. Since the movie release in 2000, a huge interest started for that model. People were starting looking for exact replica of that movie star. If you are one of these, be aware when choosing your automaker. Unique Performance, known for working with Chip Foose, was involve with fraudulent transactions. Apparently, customers have been fronting expensive charges for their sort-of-endorsed Mustang Shelby Eleanor and not getting them for years! Then come the second problem, Texas Police found that all 61 vintage cars were built with fake VIN plates.

Muscle car or just plain race car? A question to ponder, however, this monster of a car was destined for the streets in 1961. With the help of famed race car driver Carroll Shelby, Ford, and British car maker AC, the 427 Cobra was eventually born. Carroll had initially approached GM for an engine to drop into this fiber glass body, however GM was reluctant because it would add competition to its race dominating Corvette. Ford on the other hand was more than eager to develop a significant challenge for the Corvette and so happily donated any and every V8 engine the engineers deemed could fit into this beauty. After a series of engines were fitted, the dominant engine and the one this blog focuses on is the 425hp, 7.0 litre, 428ci. Capable of a top speed of just under 300km/h (298km/h according to most sources) this car was a rocket well ahead of its time. Back in the ‘60’s, this car posted terrible sales figures and Car and Driver is actually quoted as calling it a ‘sales disaster’! Fast forward to present day however and this ‘failure’ can be seen fetching dollar amounts upwards of $400,000 at class car auctions. Complete with a Carroll Shelby signed dash plate, this car is not only a car collectors must have, but it is certainly an absolute work of art. From its intimidating side exit exhaust pipes to its open top design, this car is truly an iconic nameplate to automotive history. In fact, Carroll’s company, Shelby Automobiles still produces a modern variant of the car. Although perhaps not record breaking but surely eye opening is Carroll’s sale of his own personal Cobra, which sold at Barrett Jackson’s auction in Arizona for a cool 2.8 million dollars. His parents may have named him Carroll, but surely no one is laughing now…

Ahh, the spoiler, love it or hate it, this is perhaps one of the most recognizable design element any muscle car in the ‘70’s could have asked for. It’s huge. Of course, this was back in the good ‘ol days of rear-wheel drive cars with monster V8’s under the hood. Down-force from a spoiler not only made sense then, it was almost required! And so we look at the 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Super Bird. These were serious machines of their day, in fact, this larger Plymouth was actually lighter than a Cuda. This car was a bear bones drag strip aficionado. It was the tough kid on the block. Corvettes were fragile, Mustangs preferred nice smooth asphalt to really let loose on. The Super Bird on the other hand was at home on ovals, straights and even the dirt, known for its adaptive, aggressive suspension. Much like Wiley Coyote’s arch nemesis, the car version of the Disney character also proved difficult to track down. This was no great wonder on the streets, especially considering Plymouth stuffed a 440 cubic inch hemi under its hood. Take three carburetors, give them 2 stacks each and voila, you have yourself one 6-pack. Almost off the line, 390hp comes right to life. Those 390 horsies could bring this Bird to 60 mph in under 6 seconds!! This car quickly became the envy on the drag strip, and even ran a successful stint in the NASCAR series. In fact, for $16,000 a company called HPP will take your 2010 Dodge Challenger and turn it into a 2010 Super Bird (pictued below). If that doesn’t scream iconic muscle car, then frankly I don’t know what does…

What does Ford have to do with Italy today you may wonder? Nothing. So then what did Ford have to do with Italy in 1968? Well, still more or less nothing. Except, of course, for one thing: the new for 1968 Ford Torino was in fact named after the Italian city of Turin. Who new? Likely, the same people that cared…few to none. Ford did pick that name, and did build the car as an upscale version of the popular Ford Fairlane. In fact, it was rumored that Torino was slated as a possible name for the Mustang, which debuted just 4 years earlier. The Torino is a sad story that follows closely with many of the stories we hear about amazing muscle cars that lived into the 70’s; their power and inevitably their nameplate died. The Torino pictured above is a very cool looking Torino Cobra with a sports roof. However, believe it or not, the most popular Torino’s were in fact the 4 door sedan variants of the car. I say believe it or not because Ford built some extremely tough looking Torinos, and even competed with them in NASCAR. Fitted with a 428cid Cobra Jet motor producing 335hp, this car was a rocket. The common motor in this car (also borrowed from the Mustang) was the 289cid V8 and 305cid. Sounds like the drag car of the era for Ford right? Well Ford thought so too. But the 428 wouldn’t do (gasp) and Ford decided to throw in a 429 Super Cobra Jet complete with 370 neck-snapping horsepower. This was Fords answer to the Mopar dragster, the Plymouth Road Runner. In 1969, Road Test magazine absolutely raved about the power and control this Cobra boasted. 1970 to ’72 brought about minimal changes, and then, in the opinion of many, sadly, the muscle of the car was more or less lost in 1972 when the Torino changed into the Gran Torino. The 429 lost much of its power (albeit retained its torque) and this was largely due, in part, to the emission laws and oil crises that were beginning to hit home. Still though , Car and Driver reported this car to have accomplished 0 to 60 mph in just 6.8 seconds! As you can see, to my personal tastes, by 1973 the car had lost much of its cosmetic appeal (pictured below), and so dies yet another iconic muscle car.

We can’t be entirely sure if it was the blockbuster movie, “Smokey and the Bandit” or the actual redesign by Pontiac that boosted the Pontiac Trans Am’s popularity. But there is no doubt that the 1977 model year yielded the highest demand producing nearly 70,000 units according to many online sources. Pontiac had apparently done very well, the new look was embraced by enthusiasts, and the new engine was ever potent. The usual 455cid’s time had come, and to replace it, Pontiac used the 400cid, and for the first time ever, carried over an Oldsmobile powerplant, the 403cid. The 400 produced 180hp, and the 403 produced 185hp. The 403 was introduced for California and other higher altitude states (likely for evolving emission laws). Lest we not forget, this was the ‘70’s and by ’77, we were into our first oil embargo, and entering a recession. Pontiac also enveloped its 50th year anniversary, which was actually in ’76 by offering a very special model; the T/A 6.6. Of course, the 6.6 denotes the liters in the motor, and this equated a finely tuned 200hp machine. This brings us to the SE model, a T/A 6.6 with the special gold decal job over a deep black finished paint (more or less a carryover from the ’76 50th anniversary edition) . New wheels (in matching gold) and a much coveted T-top design topped off the “special” characteristics of this edition. This of course became a car of the era instantaneously when it was featured in the hit “Smokey and the Bandit”. This was the first time a Trans Am would be used in a production film, but not the last shot at stardom. In the 1980’s, the Trans Am was once again given the opportunity to shine as “Kit” in the hit TV series, Knight Rider. In an April, 1977 issue of Car and Driver, the ’77 T/A was clocked going from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.0 seconds, a respectable number for its generation. The Corvette of that year completed the quarter mile just 0.3 seconds quicker according to the same article. This car was therefore nothing to mess with. So whether it was the gold and black trim package, the t-top appeal, or “Smokey and the Bandit”, the 1977 Pontiac Trans Am has made our blog of iconic muscle cars.
Mik/Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14424668438682693722noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4367216242884871849.post-44250194695112691142010-10-18T15:34:00.001-04:002010-11-04T12:00:23.240-04:00Pontiac GTO The Judge 1969

Mik/Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14424668438682693722noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4367216242884871849.post-87198119815095841572010-10-18T14:32:00.003-04:002010-11-04T12:02:40.830-04:00Dodge Aspen R/T 1977

Mik/Stevehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14424668438682693722noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4367216242884871849.post-38743328622779202252010-10-18T13:53:00.005-04:002010-11-04T12:03:45.783-04:00Chevrolet Nova SS/Yenko

Production:
