1970 Plymouth Road Runner Super Bird

Ahh, the spoiler, love it or hate it, this is perhaps one of the most recognizable design element any muscle car in the ‘70’s could have asked for.  It’s huge.  Of course, this was back in the good ‘ol days of rear-wheel drive cars with monster V8’s under the hood.  Down-force from a spoiler not only made sense then, it was almost required!  And so we look at the 1970 Plymouth Road Runner Super Bird.  These were serious machines of their day, in fact, this larger Plymouth was actually lighter than a Cuda.  This car was a bear bones drag strip aficionado.  It was the tough kid on the block.  Corvettes were fragile, Mustangs preferred nice smooth asphalt to really let loose on.  The Super Bird on the other hand was at home on ovals, straights and even the dirt, known for its adaptive, aggressive suspension.  Much like Wiley Coyote’s arch nemesis, the car version of the Disney character also proved difficult to track down.  This was no great wonder on the streets, especially considering Plymouth stuffed a 440 cubic inch hemi under its hood.  Take three carburetors, give them 2 stacks each and voila, you have yourself one 6-pack.  Almost off the line, 390hp comes right to life.  Those 390 horsies could bring this Bird to 60 mph in under 6 seconds!!  This car quickly became the envy on the drag strip, and even ran a successful stint in the NASCAR series.  In fact, for $16,000 a company called HPP will take your 2010 Dodge Challenger and turn it into a 2010 Super Bird (pictued below).  If that doesn’t scream iconic muscle car, then frankly I don’t know what does…
